Birdwood's Macassar ebony Walking Stick with 15-carat gold collar inscribed 'General Sir W.R. Birdwood, Dragon Slayer, presented during his Australian tour by Royal Society of St. George, Queensland, 1920', the tapering shaft terminating in a brass and iron ferule, as a British Army officer he saw active service in the Second Boer War on the staff of Lord Kitchener. He saw action again in the First World War as commander of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps during the Gallipoli Campaign in 1915 where he commanded the Anzac Corps for the whole campaign, leading the landings on the peninsula and then the evacuation later in the year, responsible for the safe evacuation of over 36,000 troops, before becoming commander-in-chief of the Fifth Army on the Western Front during the closing stages of the war, 89cm long
